Sirshasana - Headstands In the Name Of Yoga
Well..it's taken me some time to get up the nerve to move beyond basic yoga breathing and meditation techniques toward the king of the asana's - otherwise known as the headstand or Shirshasana.
I must admit, I haven't even tried standing on my head or hands since the 6th grade public school - I won't share with you how many years that takes me back, but it's a long time.
Interestingly, my local yoga teacher explained the benefits as circulatory, digestion, self-confidence and even stimulating hair growth - BINGO!
How vain does that make me that the big advantage that convinced me I had to add the headstand to my yoga and meditation session is growing more hair?
The first time was pretty shakey, I had to get my wife to spot me and relied on two of the more sturdy walls in my upstairs hallway to help support the load.
Interestingly, once I got up, supporting most of my weight on my forearms with my hands linked in front of my head, it turned out ok and I was easily able to last the 20s I had allocated for my first session.
With so many benefits, I will be continuing to practice progressively longer headstand poses and look forward to adding it as a regular asana to my growing list of yoga poses.
