How Do I Keep My Thoughts Out During Meditation

A very common question, and source of confusion for people who try yoga and meditation is how do I keep my thoughts out during meditation?

It's true, the minute you decide to focus on meditation, your head becomes filled with thoughts from the day, and if you are really expecting to suddenly empty your mind during meditation, then you will find your meditation a constant battle of wills within your mind.

Instead of trying to "clear" your mind, what you want to do is decide that you want to "detach" yourself from the thoughts.

I struggled with this battle for months before I understood to unconditionally accept all my thoughts as they race through my mind rather than trying to battle each one to keep it out.

A technique that worked wonders for me when meditating is to pretend you are in a movie theatre, all by yourself, and the thoughts that come to mind are simply a movie that you watch objectively. Your job is to let your mind unburden itself during your meditation.

Once you take this attitude, suddenly, your mind is at peace and eventually, within a few minutes you will be able to re-focus your mind on your chakra, pattern, voice or whatever pattern you have chosen to use in your meditation.

Next time you struggle with your thoughts, just let them be - and oddly enough, they will eventually go away.
